Action Genre

As fast and furious was the last movie I've watched, I figured this was an easy choice as I really enjoyed the movie.

The definition of action is a film genre in which the protagonist or protagonists are thrust into a series of events that typically include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, rescues, and frantic chases. This kind of movie genre is targeted to sell to young males aged around 16-25 years old. This is because most action films have large amounts of fast-paced scenes, violence, and sexual content which would be the gratifications this audience will look for. Usually, there is a hero and a villain, and the hero always comes out saving the world or defeating the villain. The hero usually tries to stop the villain to save the victim.

Content

Violence is a clear indicator that it is an action film. For example, like a big fight scene in the movie. Violence is not just used to make viewers feel gratification and satisfaction but can also be used for various other feelings depending on the storyline. For example, the goal of some movies or films is to make you shocked or recoil or jump back. For others, it is to make you feel suspense, nervous, or even sick.

An example would be, In the movie Spiderman 2. Spider-Man Vs. Doc Oc. This scene shows a huge fight between the hero and the villain.

Part of what makes action movies so intriguing to the audience is, the constant activity going on. Even though the audience can already guess what's going to happen, there is something about the entertainment factor of the film.  The action movie can create a scenario of stress, but this stress happens in complete control and is short-lived – this is something that people enjoy. So the entire movie gives the person short-term excitement or short-term stress. Action film is a film genre in which the protagonist or protagonists are thrust into a series of events that typically include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, rescues, and frantic chases. Common tropes of the genre include explosions, car chases, fistfights, and shootouts. The feeling of stress creates an urge to keep watching

An example of this is the Dark Knight Rises. It creates stress throughout the entire movie. On whether Batman will defeat the joker and save the city.

Production

Generally, Action films will start off with an establishing shot of where it is taking place. And it usually starts off with action right away. Dramatic Close Up Action shots are also used to create a sense of connection with the actor. This is used in a big part of the film. Like a showdown is about to happen. This is where the audience starts to really take notice of the film.  This allows the actor to establish a strong emotional connection with the audience, and the audience to intimately see details in the subject's face they wouldn't see otherwise in a wide shot, long shot, or full shot. There are generally many cuts within the movie. They cut out scenes very often because there is so much going on at a time. The sound of the film is used to create a sense of urgency and a sense of something big is about to happen. It is generally very loud and intense.

Fast and furious is a great example of this as the sound in this film is very loud and intense.

Marketing

The audience during these films usually ranges from males ages 16-25. This is no surprise as males of these ages have a lot of testosterone and like watching films like this. Although females also enjoy this kind of film, males of these ages tend to watch them more often as they feel it is more socially acceptable. Just like males don't watch romantic movies as much as females do. For example,  Infinity War was epic in many ways. Studios will aim to sell tickets by showing epic set pieces in marketing materials but in doing so, it spoils the natural surprise fans would have got if they hadn't been exposed to it. This is where Marvel has excelled with Avengers: Endgame marketing. Usually in commercials, they show off the explosions and action scenes to catch the audience's attention to watch the film.

Samples

Jurassic World is one of the most top-selling action films ever. It features Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Chris Pratt( Owen ) is called in to help tame the dinosaurs as they are breaking out of their cages and terrorizing people. It is a very action-filled movie with suspense created by having to stay quiet and undercover so the dinosaurs won't';. see them. Located off the coast of Costa Rica, the Jurassic World luxury resort provides a habitat for an array of genetically engineered dinosaurs, including the vicious and intelligent Indominus rex. When the massive creature escapes, it sets off a chain reaction that causes the other dinos to run amok. Now, it's up to a former military man and animal expert (Chris Pratt) to use his special skills to save two young brothers and the rest of the tourists from an all-out, prehistoric assault. There are multiple scenes where it is at night time which makes the scene way more intense rather than being light outside.

Dunkirk is a great example of an action film. It is  based of a true story and shows the fighting between the two countries. May/June 1940. Four hundred thousand British and French soldiers are hole up in the French port town of Dunkirk. The only way out is via sea, and the Germans have air superiority, bombing the British soldiers and ships without much opposition. The situation looks dire and, in desperation, Britain sends civilian boats in addition to its hard-pressed Navy to try to evacuate the beleaguered forces. This is that story, seen through the eyes of a soldier amongst those trapped forces, two Royal Air Force fighter pilots, and a group of civilians on their boat, part of the evacuation fleet. By the situation looking dire, it creates a suspense and stressfulness throughout the whole film. There are many scenes with fighter jets and soldiers fighting which creates action throughout the entire movie.
